Life at SCMS.

My experience at Orwell School of Communication was a mix of squeezes, growth opportunities, new connections, discipline, and progress. There were days that weren't really pleasant, but other days were quite impactful and productively engaging. Most of the lectures were high impact and the content of Orwell is super and marketplace relevant.

My Orwell experience has been a mix of many things; great conversations, eye-opening lectures, engagements with industry players amongst many things. I found that the classes were structured with communication expertise in view. Beyond merely being addressed as students, scholars are taught and expected to think on their feet always as though they already are communications consultants and owners of media outfits. The lectures sufficiently bridged the gap between the classroom and the boardroom, as faculties were chosen from various disciplines where they have mastery and strength.

My experience at Orwell School of Communication and Media Studies has been valuable. Although the policy makers are strict, that time really dealt with me, especially the policy of turning on our camera during lectures. It prevented me from multitasking because my job is very demanding. Most times I’m still coming back home and I won’t even shower because I have a presentation or I need to write a CAT immediately after the day's stress and waking up very early in the morning for the next days activity. But thank God nobody asked us to turn on the camera again after a while. However, above all one of the things I have learnt is the importance of effective communication, and critical thinking. I am grateful for the knowledge the school has given me. My journey at Orwell has been one of learning, and growth, and I believe the lessons I have gained will continue to guide me in the future.

When I look back at my journey/experience at the Orwell School of Communication and media studies, it was not just about obtaining an MSc it was about a journey of self-rediscovery professionally. I came to Orwell’s with several years of experience in broadcasting, I actually thought I understood communication having practiced it for years until a lot started unfolding. I realized that experience and knowledge are not the same thing. I was encouraged to question things I took for granted, communication was deeper than just having feedback, speaking or writing. Some topics challenged me and made me think about situations I have experienced in my professional career and how I would have handled it better. A topic that was particularly special to me, media management and consultancy, because it connects with encounters I have had in my professional career, from leadership to strategy, emotional intelligence and problem solving. The journey has not been easy, at a point I sat down and asked myself “Amanda who send you go back school? Are you sure you can do this? The CATs and assignments were not “childsplay”, they stretched me. The researches, submission deadlines were enough to cause anxiety, combining the home front, work and classes. These moments thought me something about myself, which is that I am capable of doing more if only I believe in myself. I no longer see myself as just a broadcaster but a communication professional who has combined knowledge and experience. I can’t end this without mentioning I had some fantastic scholars as classmates who looked out for me, discussing assignments and sending me reminders when it’s time for classes. Orwell has given me lifelong friends and professional colleagues. Finally to the Faculty, seasoned professionals, who went above and beyond not just to teach but to share real life experiences and insight, pushing us out of our comfort zone. I may leave the classroom with a certificate but one thing I have gotten is that I have acquired knowledge that will amplify my voice, for this I am truly grateful.

My journey through the Master’s program in Applied Strategic Communication and Media Management at the Orwell School of Communications has been nothing short of transformative. When I began this program, I already had a deep foundation in visual storytelling and media production, but I was looking for the intellectual rigor to elevate how I approach high,level messaging. The coursework consistently challenged me to look beyond the lens. From dissecting the intricacies of media economics and digital convergence to mastering leadership communications within complex systems, the curriculum forced me to think critically about how narratives shape public perception and institutional trust. Applying concepts like framing theory, emotional intelligence, and crisis management frameworks to real,world scenarios,such as analyzing the turnaround of heritage media organizations or handling sensitive public sector communications,profoundly sharpened my strategic edge. Balancing late,night research and rigorous assignments with my daily responsibilities of leading multi,camera productions and directing media strategy wasn't always easy. However, the Orwell experience ultimately gave me the ultimate toolkit: the ability to seamlessly merge cutting,edge creative production with high,level, data,driven strategic communication. I am leaving this program not just as a better media professional, but as a more visionary strategic leader.

The most memorable part of Orwell for me was the hands-on, industry-driven approach. The facilitators were seasoned professionals who didn't just teach theory; they shared real-world case studies, gave honest feedback, and challenged us to think like leaders. The peer environment was also powerful — being in a room with other driven media professionals, actors, and brand executives pushed me to raise my standard. Every class felt like a masterclass in excellence. Orwell gave me language for what I was already doing and structure for where I was going. It transformed me from a talented host into a strategic communicator. Today, whether I'm on stage hosting, on air at Yanga 89.9FM, or training speakers at The Microphone Conference, I apply the principles of audience insight, message architecture, and brand positioning that I learnt at Orwell. The school reinforced my belief that communication is architecture — and that every word should be intentional.

From the first time I heard the school's mantra, "Knowledge Amplifies Your Voice," I knew that 'school' at Orwell Schools of Communications and Media Studies would be different. And to say the least, I was not disappointed. My experience at Orwell Schools of Communications and Media Studies can be summarily said to be expository, informative and enriching. From the faculties' very interactive but educative lectures to the various assessments and evaluations, I have learnt that effective communication goes beyond simply passing information. Of recent, I have caught myself looking "implicitly" into everything around my environment, which literally could not be seen "explicitly." Indeed, Orwell School of Communications and Media Studies is a place to be experienced.

My experience at the Orwell School of Communications broadened my professional and intellectual perspective, strengthening my understanding of strategic communication, leadership and critical thinking. It enabled me to connect academic knowledge with over three decades of journalism and media management, transforming my outlook from journalist and editor to that of a strategic communicator and media leader.

For the longest time, I put off doing my Master’s, but starting this programme has been one of the most rewarding decisions I’ve made. Balancing work and school wasn’t always easy, but it pushed me to become more disciplined, intentional and confident in what I bring to the table. Beyond the academics, the experience has challenged me, expanded my thinking and helped me grow both personally and professionally. I’m grateful I finally took the leap, and thankful to the Dean and the amazing faculty for making the journey even more meaningful.

My experience at Orwell has been both enlightening and challenging. I am grateful for the experience because it has given me greater confidence in presenting myself as a communications professional. Having graduated with a degree in Computer Science and built over five years of practical experience in communications, Orwell has helped me complement that practical experience with a broader perspective, structure, and deeper theoretical knowledge of the profession. The programme has challenged me to think more critically and strategically about communications and has helped me connect what I have learnt in practice with the principles and frameworks behind it. I now feel better equipped with the knowledge, confidence, and perspective required to take on the next phase of my career as a strategic communications professional.

To be honest, my journey at the Orwell School of Communication and Media Studies has been an intellectually enriching and professionally transformative experience. Coming into the programme with a background in Public Administration and with several years of practical experience in marketing and communications, I was particularly interested in strengthening the theoretical, strategic, and analytical foundations behind the work I already do. Through the amazing faculty, the programme has challenged me to think beyond communication simply as the creation and distribution of messages. I have gained a deeper understanding of communication strategy, audience behaviour, media, branding, marketing principles, research, and the role of communication in shaping organisations and society. One of the most valuable aspects of my experience has been the opportunity to connect academic knowledge with real-world professional practice. The learning environment encouraged critical thinking, intellectual curiosity, and a broader appreciation of how effective communication can influence perception, build trust, drive engagement, and create impact. My time at Orwell has also reinforced my belief that the future of marketing and communications belongs to professionals who can combine creativity with strategy, technology with human insight, and storytelling with evidence. The programme has therefore not only added to my academic qualifications; it has sharpened the way I think, analyze problems, develop strategies, and approach communication challenges. I am grateful for the knowledge, experience, relationships, and perspectives gained throughout this journey. Orwell has been an important chapter in my professional and personal development, and I look forward to applying what I have learnt to create greater value, influence, and impact in the years ahead.
